Having 99% of the countries food need met by a single domestically grown crop is dumb. In the event of a significant natural disaster or a new strain of virus that can effect them, it would be disastrous. Imagine a foreign agent with a bio weapon slipping in undetected in order to destabilise the country. Having a variety of crops helps defend against this and importing some food helps provide a safety net. The USA being a net exporter also imports large amounts of food.

This show seems to push towards being philosophical entertainment over being a realistic vision of the future. And yeah, I think that 99% crop thing is just a convenient weakness cooked up for the big bad to exploit. Shame on the author for their lazy writing.
